Xavi Hernández Reflects on Barcelona Tenure and Future Coaching Ambitions

Xavi hernandez reflect on Barcelona tenure

Former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández has opened up about his time at the Catalan club, admitting that his deep emotional attachment to Barça may have hindered his ability to deliver the consistent success expected of him.

Xavi’s Barcelona Legacy: A Mixed Bag of Success and Struggles

A club legend who made 767 appearances as a player, Xavi returned to Barcelona in 2021 to replace Ronald Koeman. In his first full season in charge (2022-23), he led Barça to their first LaLiga title in four years, alongside a Spanish Supercopa victory.

However, his second full campaign ended trophy-less, leading to his dismissal in the summer of 2024.

Reflecting on his tenure, Xavi acknowledged the immense challenges he faced when he took over.

The club was going through one of the worst periods in its history [when I was appointed], possibly even worse than the early 2000s,” he told France Football.

Despite guiding the team through a turbulent era, Xavi believes his emotional ties to the club may have impacted his decision-making.

“I was more emotional than I should have been in certain moments, but this experience has been a valuable lesson in learning for me.”

Mistakes and Lessons Learned

Before taking charge at Barça, Xavi’s only coaching experience came at Qatari side Al Sadd, where he spent two years.

He arrived at Barcelona when they were ninth in LaLiga, guiding them to second place in his first half-season.

This was followed by a triumphant 2022-23 campaign, but his final season saw struggles in adapting tactics, particularly after Sergio Busquets’ departure.

I admit that I made some mistakes in management.”

“I chose to play with a midfield that included three attacking players, but it wasn’t always the best option.”

However, Xavi takes pride in nurturing a new generation of talent, including Fermín López, Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, and Alejandro Balde youngsters who are now integral to Barça’s future.

Barça’s New Era Under Hansi Flick

Since Xavi’s departure, Barcelona have flourished under new coach Hansi Flick.

The club won the Supercopa in January and remains in contention for LaLiga, the Champions League, and the Copa del Rey. Flick has capitalized on the foundation laid by Xavi, particularly in terms of youth development.

After initially planning a sabbatical year, Xavi is now ready to return to management and is open to offers from top clubs.

“I have nothing concrete on the table,” he admitted. “I am open [to offers]. Why not coach another team in LaLiga? I am looking for an exciting project.”

His ambitions are clear—he wants to win the biggest trophies in football.

“I want to win the Champions League, the Euros, the World Cup.”

With a wealth of experience and a hunger for success, Xavi’s next chapter in coaching could be just as compelling as his storied playing career. The football world will be watching closely to see where the Barcelona legend lands next.
