Southampton Football Club has parted ways with head coach Russell Martin, following a dismal start to the Premier League season.
The 38-year-old’s departure comes after a humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Martin’s tenure at the helm of Southampton has been marked by a series of disappointing results, with the team languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table.
With a mere five points from 16 games, the Saints are already nine points adrift from safety.
In a statement released by the club, the board expressed their gratitude to Martin for his dedication and hard work during his 18-month tenure.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given the club on and off the pitch,” the statement read.
Despite leading Southampton to promotion via a thrilling 1-0 win over Leeds United in the Championship playoff final in May,
Martin’s inability to adapt his tactics to the demands of the Premier League has ultimately led to his downfall.
The writing was on the wall following the defeat against Spurs, with Martin admitting that he didn’t recognize his team in the first half.
“I am pleased they stuck out in the second half,” he said. “At this point, it is about pride and showing some care for each other.”
Martin’s commitment to his eye-catching style of play earned him plaudits last season, but his refusal to bend from his tactics has seen his side become far too easy to beat in the top flight.
As the search for Martin’s replacement begins, Southampton fans will be hoping that the new manager can inspire a dramatic turnaround in fortunes and steer the team to safety.
