Former Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney has been relieved of his duties as manager of Championship side Plymouth Argyle.
The 39-year-old’s tenure ended after just seven months, with the club confirming his departure by “mutual consent” and with “immediate effect.”
A Brief Yet Challenging Spell at Home Park
Rooney took charge of Plymouth in May, succeeding Ian Foster, after previous managerial stints at Derby County, DC United, and Birmingham City. Despite high hopes, Plymouth has struggled under his leadership, currently sitting at the bottom of the Championship table, four points adrift of safety.
A dismal run of form saw the Pilgrims manage just one win in their last 14 league matches. The tipping point came with a 2-0 defeat to relegation rivals Oxford United, which was met with boos from Plymouth supporters.

Club’s Official Statement
In a statement on their website, Plymouth Argyle expressed gratitude to Rooney and his coaching team for their contributions.
Alongside Rooney, assistant head coach Mike Phelan and first-team coach Simon Ireland have also left the club.
“First-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and club captain Joe Edwards will lead the team for our Sky Bet Championship match against Bristol City on New Year’s Day,” the statement read, adding that updates regarding a permanent replacement will follow.
The club also reassured fans, thanking them for their patience and support during this transitional phase.
Rooney’s Farewell
Rooney responded with a heartfelt message, expressing his appreciation for the club and its supporters.
“I want to thank the board of Plymouth Argyle, especially Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip, for their trust and support.
Thanks also to the staff, players, and fans who made my time here special. To the Green Army, your passion at Home Park created unforgettable memories,” he said.
He also gave a special mention to his coaching staff for their dedication and support, stating, “Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart.”
The Road Ahead for Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth has conceded more goals than any other team in England’s top four divisions this season while struggling to score at the other end. Interim boss Kevin Nancekivell faces a tough task as he prepares the team for a crucial clash against Bristol City.
With Liam Manning’s side sitting comfortably in 10th place, Plymouth will need a strong performance to begin turning their season around.
