Darwin Nunez ‘Not Good Enough’ for Liverpool but Could Fit Manchester United, Says Lianne Sanderson

Darwin Núñez; potential to leave Liverpool in Summer

Former England forward Lianne Sanderson has criticized Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, claiming he is “not good enough” for the Reds, though she believes he could still make Manchester United’s starting XI.

Nunez’s form has come under scrutiny following a glaring miss in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Wednesday. With the game in the balance, the Uruguayan forward squandered a golden opportunity to secure a win for title-chasing Liverpool, missing an open goal from inside the box.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot addressed the miss, saying:

“It was not Darwin’s best leg  he’s right-footed of course  but it was still a big chance.

Very unlucky, and I was hoping he would get another chance because a player like him probably wouldn’t miss two chances in a row.”

However, Slot expressed concern over Nunez’s reaction to the miss, criticizing his mentality in the pre-Manchester City press conference:

“I can accept every miss… but what was harder to accept was his behaviour after that chance.

It got too much in his head and he wasn’t the usual Darwin. He was too disappointed and that is why he was a fraction short.”

Since joining Liverpool from Benfica in 2022 for a potential club-record fee of £85m, Nunez has struggled to consistently impress.

His inconsistency has led to doubts over his future at Anfield, with rumors of a potential move to Saudi Arabia in January.

Sanderson’s Verdict: Not at Liverpool’s Level

Sanderson did not hold back in her assessment of Nunez’s performances:

“You have to give players time to adapt… But he’s had that time now. This is his third season. Everyone misses chances, but the elite players know how to get over it quicker.

“I can’t deny he works his socks off but he’s just not good enough… He’s got all the attributes to be a top, top player.

He’s good in the air, he’s got pace, but he just isn’t that guy. That’s the reality.”

Despite her harsh criticism, Sanderson believes Nunez could still be an upgrade for Manchester United over current striker Rasmus Hojlund.

Hojlund, who moved to Old Trafford for £72m, scored 16 goals in his first season but has struggled in the Premier League this term.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot is focused on keeping Nunez at the club as they push for both Premier League and Champions League success.

Meanwhile, Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is reportedly eyeing new strikers in the summer, with Viktor Gyokeres and Liam Delap among the rumored targets.

As Liverpool’s title hopes hang in the balance, Nunez’s ability to bounce back from criticism and regain his confidence could be pivotal in the club’s season.
