Ruud van Nistelrooy expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Manchester United fans, players, and staff in an emotional parting message.
The Dutch football legend, who took charge as interim manager following Erik ten Hag‘s sacking in late October, shared his reflections on his departure after the appointment of Ruben Amorim as United’s new head coach.
Van Nistelrooy’s Farewell
“To everyone at Manchester United Football Club, in particular the backroom staff, the players, and the fans:
“I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible efforts and support.
It has been a privilege and honour to represent the club as a player, coach, and manager.
I will always cherish the memories we have shared together.
“Man Utd will always have a special place in my heart, and I hope there are many more glory days at Old Trafford very soon—not only because I want the club to do well, but because you all deserve it! All the best and take care, Ruud.”

A Storied Career with Manchester United
Van Nistelrooy, who led the Red Devils’ attack between 2001 and 2006, was instrumental in securing Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup triumphs during his tenure as a player. Notably, he won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2002/03 season.
His recent return to Old Trafford came in July 2024, when he joined as Erik ten Hag‘s assistant. Following Ten Hag’s dismissal after a loss to West Ham, Van Nistelrooy was promoted to interim head coach, leading United to three wins and a draw in four matches.
Despite his impressive record as interim manager, Ruben Amorim‘s appointment during the November international break marked the end of Van Nistelrooy‘s second spell at the club.
Manchester United’s Statement
On Monday, Manchester United officially confirmed Van Nistelrooy’s departure, issuing a statement that read:
“Ruud rejoined in the summer and has taken charge of the team for the past four matches as interim head coach.
“Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend.
We are grateful for his contribution and the way in which he has approached his role throughout his time with the club.
He will always be very welcome at Old Trafford.”
The club also announced the departures of Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar, and Pieter Morel from the coaching team.
What’s Next for Manchester United?
Ruben Amorim, formerly of Sporting CP, will lead United for the first time in an away match against Ipswich on Sunday, November 24.
The Red Devils currently sit 13th in the Premier League standings, just four points shy of the top four and trailing leaders Liverpool by 13 points.
