Ally McCoist Reveals Surprising First Choice for Rangers Manager

Ally McCoist reveals Rangers plan on Lampard

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has made a shocking admission, revealing that his dream choice for the next Rangers manager was not Steven Gerrard, but rather Chelsea and England legend Frank Lampard.

McCoist’s Honest Assessment

McCoist expressed his disappointment with the decline of the club since their league title win and Europa League final appearance.

When asked about his preferred candidate for the manager’s position, McCoist surprisingly named Lampard as his top choice.

Lampard’s Unavailability

However, McCoist acknowledged that Lampard’s appointment was unlikely, given his recent success with Coventry in the Championship.

Lampard has enjoyed a strong start with the Sky Blues, winning 10 of his first 19 games and propelling the team to seventh in the table, just a point off the play-offs.

Barry Ferguson’s Appointment

In the end, Rangers opted to appoint former club captain Barry Ferguson as their new head coach until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Ferguson, who won five league titles, five Scottish Cups, and five League Cups during his playing career with Rangers, will be joined by coaches Issame Charai, Neil McCann, Billy Dodds, and Allan McGregor.

Ferguson’s First Game

Ferguson’s first game in charge will be away to Kilmarnock on Wednesday night, as he looks to steer Rangers back on track and reduce the 13-point gap with arch-rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

Gerrard’s Link to Rangers

While Gerrard was tipped for a return to the Ibrox dugout, McCoist’s revelation about Lampard’s candidacy adds a new twist to the story.

Gerrard, who guided Rangers to their first Premiership title in 10 years, is still fondly remembered by the Rangers faithful, but it seems that McCoist had other preferences for the manager’s role.
