Kylian Mbappé opened up about his early struggles at Real Madrid, attributing them to being “too hungry” and “impatient” in his new environment.
The star forward sat down with Canal+’s Clique program for his first in-depth interview since joining the Spanish giants.
Despite scoring 11 goals in 21 appearances across all competitions, including a recent strike in Real Madrid’s 3-0 La Liga victory over Girona, Mbappé has faced criticism for his overall performances.
High-profile defeats, such as the 4-0 El Clásico loss to Barcelona, have amplified scrutiny around his transition from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
Adjusting to Life at Real Madrid
“[Real Madrid] is a new context, a new club, a new environment.”
“At first, I was too hungry. It wasn’t good for me because I was impatient. But I’m passionate and competitive. Sometimes that works against me.”
Mbappé’s start at Madrid was promising, with a goal in their UEFA Super Cup win over Atalanta and six more in September.

However, a subsequent dip in form—two goals in nine matches—coincided with defeats to Lille, AC Milan, and Liverpool. Reflecting on this period, Mbappé emphasized patience.
“It hasn’t been the best start to the season, but we’re preparing for trophies, which is what counts.”
“At Madrid, you have to wait for the second half of the season. That’s when you’re judged.”
France National Team Absence
Mbappé also addressed his absence from the France national team, which sparked speculation about his international future.
After captaining France during Euro 2024 while playing with a broken nose, he participated in the September international break.
However, injuries and discussions with coach Didier Deschamps led to his omission from the October and November squads.
“My love for the France national team has not changed. Yes, I miss it.”
“In September, I asked the coach not to call me up. I had just arrived in Madrid and had a very short holiday.
In October, I got injured. There were discussions, and the coach decided it was better not to call me up in November. He’s the boss, and I respect his decisions.”
Reflecting on His PSG Exit
Mbappé’s departure from PSG remains a contentious topic, with an ongoing legal dispute over unpaid wages and bonuses.
However, the forward expressed gratitude for his seven years in Paris, describing them as “extraordinary.”
“PSG meant a lot to me. I had conflicts with people and defended my rights as a player, but that didn’t represent the club.
I never mixed that with my relationships with players, the academy, or the squad,” Mbappé said.
Addressing criticism from PSG fans, he added,
“They think it was a hobby for me before going to Madrid. That’s not true. I still watch PSG matches and have maintained a connection with the club. That doesn’t just disappear.”
As Real Madrid prepares for the crucial second half of the season, Mbappé remains determined to prove his worth at the club.
With his unwavering competitive spirit and a history of bouncing back under pressure, fans and critics alike will be watching closely.
By tackling challenges both on and off the pitch, Mbappé aims to solidify his place as one of the best players of his generation while pursuing glory with Real Madrid.
