Emi Martinez Banned For 2 Games By FIFA For Offensive Behaviour

Emiliano martinez suspended

Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has received a two-game suspension from FIFA due to what has been classified as “offensive behavior” during recent matches against Chile and Colombia.

Martinez, who plays for Aston Villa, has a reputation for controversial celebrations, having previously drawn criticism for his antics during major tournaments.

After Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory, he made headlines by celebrating with the Golden Glove trophy in an inappropriate manner, holding it against his crotch during the award ceremony.

This action was widely condemned but didn’t deter Martinez, as he later replicated the gesture with the Copa America trophy during a celebratory parade in Buenos Aires following Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Chile in a CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup qualifying match.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) released a statement on Friday disagreeing with the ruling:

“Despite the defense made by the player and the Argentine Football Association, the Disciplinary Commission of the governing body of World Football made the following decision:

“Martinez is declared responsible for his offensive behaviour and his violation of the principles of fair play (art. 13 CDF).

“It should be noted that the Argentine Football Association expresses its absolute disagreement with the decision taken by the FIFA disciplinary committee,”

In a separate incident, Martinez also made waves during Argentina’s next qualifier, a 2-1 loss to Colombia, when he struck a local television camera in frustration.

This behavior, combined with his previous actions, led to FIFA’s decision to impose a two-match ban.

As a result, Martinez will be absent from Argentina’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Bolivia, which are set to take place during the upcoming international break in October.

This suspension could have significant implications for Argentina as they continue their campaign for the 2026 World Cup.

Martinez’s absence may challenge the team, as his performances have often been instrumental in securing key victories.
