Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is anxiously awaiting updates on the fitness of key midfielder Joelinton ahead of their decisive Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg showdown against Arsenal.
The Magpies will welcome the Gunners to St James’ Park on Wednesday night, aiming to defend their two-goal advantage and secure a spot in the final.
Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta’s side faces an uphill battle after suffering a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg last month.
However, Arsenal will be brimming with confidence after delivering a dominant 5-1 victory over Premier League champions Manchester City at the weekend.
In contrast, Newcastle endured a disappointing 2-1 home loss to Fulham on Saturday, a game in which Joelinton sustained a potentially significant injury.

Joelinton Injury Concern for Newcastle
The Brazilian midfielder, a key figure for Newcastle this season, was forced off with a knee injury and later spotted wearing a protective brace, raising concerns over his availability for the crucial fixture.
Addressing the media ahead of the game, Howe admitted that Joelinton remains a doubt but assured fans that the club is doing everything possible to get him fit.
“Joey was put in a knee brace after the game as a precaution, but he’s out of it now,” Howe said in his pre-match press conference.
“We’ll assess his condition ahead of the game. I’d say he’s a doubt, but we’ll give him every minute we can to try and get him ready.”
Newcastle’s Squad Fitness and Tactical Approach
Newcastle’s squad remains somewhat depleted, with Callum Wilson returning, but Harvey Barnes and Jamal Lascelles still sidelined. Despite this, Howe emphasized the importance of managing the squad effectively and fielding a competitive lineup.
“From my perspective, we want a strong and competitive team on the pitch. Squad management is crucial, especially in such high-stakes games,” he added.
Despite holding a two-goal cushion, Howe insists that Newcastle must maintain an aggressive approach against Arsenal to avoid complacency.
“We’re only at the halfway stage. The away leg was a strong performance, but Arsenal’s quality means the tie is still alive,” Howe explained.
“We need to be positive and aggressive. Engaging the crowd at St James’ Park will be crucial in making the most of every opportunity.”
St James’ Park Factor: Newcastle’s Home Fortress
Newcastle has built a formidable record at St James’ Park, and Howe is counting on the home advantage to propel his team to the final.
“We’ve become a really potent team at home, and that’s going to be key in this match,” he said.
“The atmosphere will be electric, and we need to harness that energy to push us over the line.”
With a place in the Carabao Cup final at stake, all eyes will be on Joelinton’s fitness and Newcastle’s ability to fend off Arsenal’s resurgence.
The Magpies are on the brink of a historic achievement, but they must remain focused and resilient to seal their ticket to Wembley.
