Manchester City Close in on £49.8M Nico Gonzalez Deal Ahead of Deadline Day

Nico Gonzalez

Manchester City are on the verge of completing a £49.8 million transfer for Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez, as they look to strengthen their squad before the winter transfer window closes.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 23-year-old Spanish midfielder is set to join the reigning Premier League champions after an agreement in principle was finally reached following prolonged negotiations.

Gonzalez has reportedly been granted permission by Porto to travel to Manchester, where he will undergo a medical before signing his contract.

His arrival is seen as crucial, with City looking to fill the void left by Rodri, who has been sidelined since September due to an ACL injury that required surgery.

The Spanish star is not expected to return this season, making midfield reinforcements a priority for manager Pep Guardiola.

If the deal is finalized before the transfer deadline, Gonzalez will become Manchester City’s fourth signing of the January window.

The club has already secured the services of Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, and Omar Marmoush, as they aim to strengthen their squad for the season’s decisive phase.

Guardiola on City’s Winter Business

Speaking at his pre-Arsenal press conference last Friday, Guardiola explained the club’s unusual decision to be active in the January transfer window:

“The Club decided to bring in an extra player in the final third with talent, scoring, running, assists, set pieces.

We usually avoid the winter market, but this season is exceptional. We had to intervene to finish the season as best as possible.”

He also emphasized City’s strong financial position, stating:

“Players don’t come for six months; they come for four, five, six years if everything goes well. Financially, we are stable.

We are now in net profit for the past five seasons, and the club has moved well in terms of sales and performance.”

With just hours left before the transfer window closes, City fans will be eager to see whether the deal for Gonzalez is officially completed.

His arrival could provide a significant boost as the club continues its pursuit of silverware in the Premier League and Champions League.
