Rio Ferdinand has called on Manchester United’s owners to adopt a ruthless approach and clear out underperforming players from Old Trafford, emphasizing the need for decisive action amid the club’s ongoing struggles.
Ferdinand’s comments came after the surprising exit of Dan Ashworth, United’s sporting director, just five months after his appointment.
Ashworth, who was recruited from Newcastle United, left the club by mutual agreement, with the club issuing a statement thanking him for his contributions during a transitional period.
Ferdinand, a Manchester United legend, expressed the importance of carrying this same no-nonsense approach to player management. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said:

“I just hope they are this brutal with the players who aren’t good enough. Fans can all name a few who’ve been there too long or just don’t meet the standards.
Be as decisive with them get them out quickly, ASAP.”
The former defender’s plea reflects the frustration of fans as Manchester United sits 13th in the Premier League following a disappointing season.
Their recent 3-2 loss to Nottingham Forest further exemplifies their struggles.
The club’s challenges extend beyond the pitch. Erik ten Hag, who was retained despite a poor previous season, was dismissed just months into the current campaign.
His successor, Ruben Amorim, has had a rocky start, securing only four points from his initial league matches.
Addressing the Forest defeat, Amorim remarked:
“We started poorly, conceding an early goal, which made things difficult. While we improved in some areas, our performance lacked quality in crucial moments.
This is a long journey, and while we’re making progress in certain aspects, there’s still a lot to do.”
Ferdinand’s call for drastic changes comes as fans demand accountability and significant improvements both on and off the field.
The need for a stronger squad and a clear strategy is more evident than ever as the club embarks on what Amorim described as the beginning of “something big.”
