Football pundit Jamie Carragher has expressed his belief that Harry Kane will make a return to the Premier League in the future to challenge Alan Shearer’s long-standing all-time goalscoring record.
The Bayern Munich forward, who currently ranks second in the Premier League‘s historical goal charts, remains 47 goals short of Shearer’s 260-goal tally.
Kane’s Premier League Legacy
Before moving to Bayern Munich in August 2023, Kane had netted an impressive 213 goals over 11 seasons with his boyhood club, Tottenham Hotspur.
His departure to Germany momentarily halted his pursuit of Shearer’s record, leaving fans and football analysts wondering whether he would ever return to English football to complete his legacy.
While Kane’s prolific goal-scoring ability is unquestionable, Shearer’s record remains formidable, built over stellar spells with Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, and Newcastle United. As of now, the record appears safe, but speculation about Kane’s eventual return to the Premier League continues to grow.
Kane’s Success in Germany
Since joining Bayern Munich, Kane has enjoyed a seamless transition into the Bundesliga.
The England captain has been a revelation in Germany, scoring an astonishing 77 goals in his first 83 appearances for the club.
However, despite his individual brilliance, his debut season did not yield the much-coveted major trophy that he has long sought.
Recent reports have suggested that Kane is contemplating a return to England, with Liverpool among the potential destinations.
However, the 31-year-old was quick to dismiss these rumors, affirming his happiness at Bayern Munich and his commitment to the German club.
Kane’s Response to Transfer Speculation
In an interview with ESPN, Kane addressed the swirling transfer rumors, stating:
“I’m not sure. I’ve said throughout my whole career that I’m not someone who likes to think too far ahead. I’m extremely happy here. We have a fantastic team, fantastic coaching staff.”
Kane emphasized his focus on the present and reiterated that his current objective is to compete at the highest level with Bayern Munich.
While he acknowledged that football is unpredictable, he made it clear that a return to the Premier League is not currently on his radar.
“I’m not thinking about any other league or any other team. With football, I like to just go with the flow, and at the moment, the flow is here at Bayern Munich.”
Carragher’s Prediction: Kane’s Unfinished Business in England
Despite Kane’s commitment to Bayern, Jamie Carragher remains convinced that the England striker will eventually return to the Premier League, particularly to chase Shearer’s record.
Speaking on the It’s Called Soccer podcast, Carragher speculated that Kane might even be willing to join a mid-table or lower-tier Premier League club to continue his scoring exploits.

“I think he will come back. It might be tough to beat Shearer’s record, but I just think about what type of club he would go back to.”
Carragher believes that even if Kane doesn’t return to a top-tier club, he could still accumulate enough goals over several seasons to surpass Shearer’s tally.
“You know what? I could see Harry Kane playing for maybe not a top club. But maybe if he went down to a mid-table Premier League club, you could easily see him getting 10 to 15 goals-a-season.”
Carragher jokingly suggested that Kane might even be willing to take a dramatic pay cut, playing for as little as £500-a-week, just to break Shearer’s record.
“He might just be one of them: he goes to a mid-table club, then he goes to a club fighting relegation, and then he goes to a club that has just been promoted. And then he just keeps signing for free, saying, ‘I’ll play for £500-a-week because I need to beat this record!’”
Kane: England’s Greatest Striker?
Carragher also made a bold claim, stating that Kane has now surpassed Shearer, Gary Lineker, and Wayne Rooney as England’s greatest-ever striker.
He pointed out Kane’s international goal record, his club achievements, and his contributions to England’s success on the global stage.
“I think he is England’s greatest-ever striker. The competition is probably Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker…
Wayne Rooney is a funny one because when I think of strikers, I don’t really think of Wayne. I class him as more of an all-round player.”
Carragher further elaborated on Kane’s impact on English football, highlighting that he has been part of teams that reached major tournament finals, something few English strikers have achieved.
“Jimmy Greaves would probably be right up there as well, but I think what Harry Kane has done in terms of his goals in the Premier League…
If he had stayed in the Premier League, he would have beaten Alan Shearer’s record.”
Will Kane Return to the Premier League?
While Kane remains focused on his Bayern Munich career, the possibility of a return to England in the twilight of his career cannot be ruled out.
If he does decide to return, he will undoubtedly be determined to etch his name into Premier League history as the league’s all-time leading goal scorer.
Until then, football fans will continue to watch with keen interest as Kane builds his legacy, whether in Germany or potentially back in England in the years to come.
