Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence in winger Gabriel Martinelli’s ability to step up in the absence of Bukayo Saka, who has been sidelined for “many weeks” due to a hamstring injury.
The announcement came on Monday, leaving the Gunners to find alternatives to Saka’s remarkable contributions this season nine goals and 13 assists in just 24 appearances.
Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming fixture, Arteta highlighted Martinelli’s potential to make an impact.
The Brazilian international shifted to the right flank during Arsenal’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace after Saka’s departure from the field.
“[Martinelli] had a big impact in the game [against Palace], and like other players, everyone is going to have to add something extra because we rely heavily on Bukayo.”
“Gabi loves a challenge. You give him responsibility, and he thrives on it. He’s the type of player who is ready to step up, and now it’s time for the entire frontline to share the load.”

Saka’s Injury Woes
This hamstring setback marks the third injury Saka has faced this season, raising concerns about his workload.
Arteta-update-on acknowledged that various factors might have contributed to the injury, emphasizing the unpredictability of such issues.
“We’re looking into it to see if there’s anything we can do better, but nobody can be sure.”
“You might think you’re doing everything perfectly, but maybe that muscle needs something different. For now, our priority is resolving this injury and taking it day by day.
Saka has been incredibly robust over the past six years, especially for his age, but these things happen. We’ll help him recover fully.”
January Transfer Window Possibilities
While Arteta didn’t rule out making moves in the January transfer window, his primary focus remains on maximizing the potential of his current squad.
“My focus is on making this squad as competitive as possible with the resources we already have.”
“If an extraordinary opportunity arises and the club is willing, we’ll consider it, but right now, it’s about working with what we’ve got.”
Arsenal’s League Pursuit
Arsenal is set to host Ipswich Town on Friday as they aim to close the gap on league leaders Liverpool.
Liverpool’s 3-1 Boxing Day win over Leicester City extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points with a game in hand.
A victory for Arsenal would propel them past Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, positioning them six points behind second-placed Liverpool.
Arteta’s side will be determined to maintain their momentum as they navigate a challenging period without their star player, Bukayo Saka.
