Argentina Triumphs Over Uruguay 1-0 in World Cup Qualifier Despite Missing Key Stars

Argentina defeat Uruguay despite Lionel Messi absence

Argentina proved its depth and resilience on Friday, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Uruguay in Montevideo despite the absence of Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martínez, and several other key players.

The reigning world champions showcased their strength, taking a major step toward World Cup qualification.

Thiago Almada was the hero of the night, scoring the decisive goal in the 68th minute with a stunning curled strike from the edge of the box. His goal not only secured three crucial points for Argentina but also brought them within touching distance of an automatic spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With this victory, Argentina remains at the top of the South American qualifying table with 28 points from 13 matches.

A draw against Brazil at home on Tuesday would officially confirm their place in next year’s tournament. Given their 15-point lead over seventh-placed Bolivia and only five rounds remaining, qualification seems all but certain.

Uruguay, backed by a packed Centenario Stadium, started the match aggressively, creating the best chances in the first half. However, Argentina’s disciplined defense and well-structured play allowed them to absorb the pressure before gaining control in the second half.

Without Messi, Lautaro Martínez, Lisandro Martínez, and Rodrigo De Paul, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni made key adjustments.

Giuliano Simeone was handed a starting role, joining Julián Álvarez and Almada in attack. The changes paid off, with Argentina growing into the game and eventually finding the breakthrough.

Despite several missed opportunities earlier in the match, Almada’s goal proved enough, as Uruguay failed to capitalize on their limited chances registering only four shots on target.

Following the match, Scaloni expressed his pride in the team’s ability to adapt and deliver under challenging circumstances.

“We played a complete match we handled the pressure, played when we had to, and defended when necessary. I am happy not just for the win, but for how the team performed,” Scaloni said.

Argentina’s next test comes against Brazil on Tuesday at the Monumental de Núñez Stadium, where a single point will guarantee their qualification. However, the team will be without Nico González, who received a red card in injury time.

Brazil, currently third in the standings with 21 points, also faces selection headaches, as key players like goalkeeper Alisson, defender Gabriel Magalhães, and midfielder Bruno Guimarães will be unavailable.

Meanwhile, Uruguay will look to bounce back against Bolivia on Tuesday. If Bolivia fails to win, Argentina could qualify for the World Cup regardless of their result against Brazil.

With their depth on full display and another dominant performance in the books, Argentina continues to prove why they are one of the top contenders heading into the 2026 World Cup.
