West Ham United forward Michail Antonio is determined to make a comeback to professional football following a life-threatening car accident in December.
Despite suffering severe injuries, the 34-year-old insists he will return to the pitch, emphasizing his resilience and rapid progress in recovery.
Antonio’s crash occurred on December 7 in Epping, Essex, when his car collided with a tree. He revealed that the impact left his leg “completely shattered” and that he “nearly died” in the accident. Despite the severity of his injuries, the forward remains optimistic about resuming his football career.
“Yes, 100%. I will play again,” Antonio confidently told the BBC. While acknowledging that he had to confront the possibility of his career ending, he remains focused on rehabilitation, training six days a week to accelerate his return.

Antonio, known for his strength and perseverance, is already months ahead of his recovery schedule. He is confident that once he regains match fitness, he will perform at his previous level.
“This is the biggest injury I’ve ever had in my career,” Antonio admitted. “But the fact that I’m already two to three months ahead of where I should be I know that I’ll play again. Once I’m back on the pitch, I’ll get my sharpness back.”
The forward also dismissed concerns about his age affecting his performance. “I was one of the quickest at West Ham before the accident. My body wasn’t the body of a typical 34-year-old. I can still be sharp and do the business,” he said.
Before his accident, Antonio was a vital part of West Ham’s squad, making 15 appearances under then-manager Julen Lopetegui. His absence has been felt, and with Graham Potter now at the helm, fans are eager to see if Antonio can reclaim his place in the team once he returns.
Antonio shared details of his injuries, revealing he suffered multiple fractures in his femur. He underwent a keyhole surgery where doctors inserted a metal rod and secured it with screws. Initially, he was advised to avoid putting any weight on his leg for three months.
However, after consulting a second specialist, he gradually increased his mobility.
“I was told recovery could take between six to 12 months,” Antonio explained. “But seeing how far I’ve come already, I know I’ll be back sooner than expected.”
Despite the challenges, Antonio remains steadfast in his determination. His mental strength, he believes, will see him through yet another career obstacle.
“People have always doubted me, but I’ve always believed in my resilience. This is just another setbackit won’t stop me,” he said.
Antonio’s unwavering confidence and work ethic suggest that his return to professional football is not a matter of if, but when. As he continues his rehabilitation, fans and teammates will be eagerly awaiting the day he steps back onto the pitch.
