As Ruben Amorim prepares to take over as Manchester United’s head coach, he’s urging star striker Viktor Gyokeres to remain with Sporting CP for the rest of the season despite transfer speculation linking him to Old Trafford.
Amorim concluded his final Champions League match with Sporting on a high note, leading the Portuguese side to a stunning 4-1 victory over Manchester City.
Although City initially led through Phil Foden’s early goal, Sporting turned the match around with Gyokeres scoring a hat-trick, including two penalty conversions, while Maximiliano Araujo added another to seal the impressive result.
After the victory, Sporting fans gave Amorim an emotional farewell, as he’s set to depart for his role at United next Monday.
Gyokeres, who has been in sensational form with 66 goals in 67 appearances since joining from Coventry City, has been widely tipped to potentially follow Amorim to Manchester.

Addressing speculation about Gyokeres’ future, Amorim expressed his desire for the Swedish international to stay with Sporting.
“Gyokeres is a Sporting player, at a great club, and he has achieved so much here.
He should stay and finish the season,” Amorim remarked, emphasizing his commitment to respecting Sporting’s fans and players.
In a separate interview, Amorim humorously declined further comments on a potential Gyokeres transfer, noting the emotional difficulty of leaving Sporting.
“It’s tough for me to leave, and joking about Gyokeres’ future isn’t fair to Sporting.”
“Viktor should focus on finishing this season strong.”
Gyokeres, for his part, spoke highly of Amorim following the Champions League win, saying,
“We’ll miss him a lot. We’ve accomplished so much together, but we’ll move forward and face the next challenges.”
Amorim also downplayed the significance of Sporting’s victory over Manchester City, suggesting that managing in the Premier League will bring unique challenges.
“The Premier League is a different level — we’ll have to fight head-on, and it requires a different tactical approach,” he noted.
Amorim’s final game with Sporting will be against Braga on Sunday in the Primeira Liga, marking the end of a successful chapter with Sporting as he prepares for his new role in England.
