Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed he will speak with Alejandro Garnacho following the young forward’s reaction to being substituted during United’s 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town.
Garnacho, who was recalled to the starting lineup, was withdrawn before halftime following Patick Dorgu’s red card, prompting an immediate walk down the tunnel from the Argentine international.
The 20-year-old Garnacho started the match as part of Amorim’s tactical approach but was sacrificed in the 38th minute to accommodate Noussair Mazraoui.
The substitution was a direct response to Dorgu’s dismissal, which forced United to adjust to a more defensive 5-3-1 setup.
While Garnacho briefly acknowledged Amorim, his swift exit to the dressing room did not go unnoticed.

Amorim played down the significance of the incident but acknowledged the need for a conversation with the player. Speaking after the match, Amorim said:
“I’m going to talk, obviously, with Garnacho about that. So I will talk about that if you want in the next press conference.”
A Pattern of Frustration?
This is not the first time Garnacho has found himself in a challenging situation under Amorim’s management. In December, the winger, along with Marcus Rashford, was dropped for United’s 2-1 win over Manchester City.
While Garnacho managed to regain his place in the squad, Rashford was subsequently loaned to Aston Villa during the January transfer window.
When questioned about whether Garnacho’s reaction might mirror the issues seen with Rashford, Amorim was quick to downplay any speculation:
“You are making a connection with Rashford, right? It was cold and wet, maybe?”
Amorim justified the decision by highlighting the tactical need to strengthen defensively:
“We have to choose someone to go out, we have to think about set pieces also, so it was Garnacho.”
Balancing Discipline and Development
For Amorim, managing a squad filled with young talent like Garnacho requires a delicate balance of discipline and encouragement.
The Portuguese manager has shown a willingness to make tough decisions, as seen in his handling of Rashford’s situation earlier in the season.
His approach often emphasizes the collective over individual sentiment, a strategy that has seen United maintain competitive form despite internal challenges.
Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Garnacho?
The upcoming talks between Amorim and Garnacho could prove pivotal for the youngster’s future at Old Trafford.
While Garnacho’s talent is undeniable, maintaining professionalism and a team-first mentality will be crucial in winning over his manager and securing regular playing time.
As United continue their campaign, Amorim’s handling of this situation will be under scrutiny. Supporters will hope that the discussion fosters growth and understanding, allowing Garnacho to channel his frustrations positively and contribute meaningfully to the team’s ambitions.
In a season where Manchester United are juggling domestic and European commitments, maintaining squad harmony is paramount.
Amorim’s willingness to address Garnacho’s reaction head-on is a testament to his managerial philosophy.
Whether this leads to a positive outcome or further unrest remains to be seen, but one thing is certainAmorim is not shying away from making the hard calls for the benefit of the team.
