Barcelona’s Hansi Flick Urges Players to Avoid ‘Weakness’ in Referee Disputes

Hansi Flick warned Barcelona players

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has issued a strong warning to his players about the dangers of arguing with referees, emphasizing that such behavior reflects “weakness” on the pitch.

His comments come in the wake of Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham’s red card for dissent during a 1-1 draw against Osasuna on Saturday.

Referee José Luis Munuera Montero sent off Bellingham after the England international reportedly said, “f— you.” However, Bellingham later insisted there was a misunderstanding, claiming he had actually said, “f— off” in frustration.

For Flick, the exact wording is irrelevant—any form of disrespect toward match officials is unacceptable. The Barça boss has made it clear to his squad that challenging refereeing decisions is a waste of time and energy.

Flick’s No-Nonsense Approach to Refereeing Decisions

Addressing the issue in a press conference, Flick stressed the importance of discipline on the pitch.

“When you say this to me, I think it’s not nice,” he said when asked about the difference between the two phrases.

“It’s disrespectful. For me, it’s the same. But it’s not my job to decide the punishment.”

The German tactician further emphasized that only the team captain should communicate with the referee, urging his players to focus on the game rather than engaging in heated debates.

“Why waste time or energy discussing decisions with the referee? We have one person on the pitch—the captain—who is allowed to do that.

We have to accept it. I don’t like this behavior, and I told my players today that it’s not good for the team. If you argue and get a red card, it’s a weakness. We don’t want that.”

Barcelona Eyes Top Spot in LaLiga

Barcelona now finds itself in a prime position to climb to the top of the LaLiga table following Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid’s setbacks over the weekend.

Madrid’s draw, coupled with Atlético’s stalemate against Celta Vigo, means Barça could leapfrog their rivals with a win against Rayo Vallecano on Monday.

Flick’s side remains unbeaten in 11 consecutive games across all competitions since the start of the year, but they face a tough challenge against Rayo, a team that has not lost in LaLiga since December 1.

Despite the high stakes, Flick insists his team remains focused on consistent performances rather than league standings.

“We don’t look at the table. What matters is maintaining our performances until the end of the season. It’s a long journey, and we will see where we stand when the time comes.”

Team News: No Fresh Injury Concerns

Barcelona heads into the match with a nearly full-strength squad. Ronald Araújo has recovered from a minor ankle issue, while Marc-André ter Stegen, Andreas Christensen, and Marc Bernal remain the only absentees.

As Barça prepares for a crucial fixture, Flick’s emphasis on discipline and composure could prove vital in their title chase.
