Borussia Dortmund have announced the dismissal of head coach Nuri Sahin following a series of disappointing results that leave the team struggling in the Bundesliga and eliminated from the German Cup.
“Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season,” Sahin said in a statement. “I wish this special club all the best.”
A Season of Unfulfilled Promises
Sahin’s departure comes in the wake of Dortmund’s 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Despite taking the lead, the team conceded two goals in as many minutes, marking their fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions.
The team currently sits 10th in the Bundesliga table with only one win in their last nine matches. This dismal run of form has cast serious doubt over their ability to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Sporting Director’s Perspective
Dortmund’s sporting director, Lars Ricken, expressed regret over the decision while acknowledging the need for a change.
“We value Nuri Sahin and his work very much,” Ricken said.
“We hoped for a long-term collaboration and until the end, we believed in achieving a sporting turnaround together.

However, after four consecutive defeats and ongoing struggles, we have unfortunately lost faith in reaching our goals under the current setup. This decision was painful but inevitable after the game in Bologna.”
A Short-Lived Tenure
Appointed in June as the successor to Edin Terzić, Sahin’s arrival was expected to herald a new era for the club.
However, his reign has been cut short after just seven months, with Dortmund underperforming domestically and failing to capitalize on their potential in Europe.
Terzić, who led Dortmund to an improbable Champions League final last season—where they fell 2-0 to Real Madrid—left behind high expectations.
Despite an underwhelming fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga last season, Terzić’s success in Europe set a benchmark that Sahin struggled to meet.
The Road Ahead
The club’s management will now seek a new leader to steer the team back on course, with a focus on regaining their competitive edge in the Bundesliga and securing European qualification.
