Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti believes Kylian Mbappé is battling “a lack of confidence” following the star forward’s missed penalty during a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The loss leaves Madrid struggling at 24th place in the group standings.
Mbappé’s pivotal penalty miss came in the 61st minute, with the score at 1-0 after Alexis Mac Allister gave Liverpool the lead at Anfield.
The French forward’s attempt was denied by Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher, squandering the chance to level the game.
Moments later, Cody Gakpo sealed the Reds’ victory with a powerful header, securing Liverpool’s spot at the top of the group.

Ancelotti: “Patience is the Cure”
In his post-match press conference, Ancelotti empathized with Mbappé’s struggles.
“It happens a lot with forwards; there are times when it’s hard for them to score,” he said.
“There’s a cure, and it’s patience. It’s a difficult moment for him, especially after missing the penalty today. Everyone has to support him.”
The Italian tactician attributed Mbappé’s performance to a possible confidence issue.
“Sometimes, when things aren’t going well, you try to overcomplicate things.
He has scored many penalties before; missing one happens. He just needs to keep working, and this moment will pass.”
Teammates Rally Behind Mbappé
Mbappé’s recent goal drought—scoring just two goals in his last nine matches for Madrid—has sparked concerns.
However, his teammates have voiced unwavering support. Midfielder Luka Modric told Movistar,
“He looks good to us, he’s training well. Sometimes things don’t go your way, like today with the penalty, but we believe in him. He’ll deliver, for sure.”
Dani Ceballos echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the challenges of adapting to a club like Real Madrid.
“It isn’t easy coming here. We have to be patient, and he’ll achieve great things for this team.”
Liverpool Dominates While Madrid Faces Setbacks
Despite a solid first half, Madrid struggled to capitalize on key moments.
“To be honest, it’s the right result,” Ancelotti admitted.
“Liverpool deserved to win; they’re in great form. Our plan worked well initially, and the team competed until the penalty.“
The loss was compounded by an injury to midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who was substituted in the 56th minute with a suspected muscular strain.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois suggested the injury could sideline the French international for at least two to three weeks.
Madrid’s Next Steps
As Madrid looks to bounce back, patience and resilience will be key for both Mbappé and the team. With tough fixtures ahead, the support of his teammates and coaching staff will be crucial in helping the forward regain his confidence and rediscover his scoring touch.
