Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended after a controversial video surfaced in which he allegedly criticizes Liverpool and former manager Jurgen Klopp.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) confirmed Coote’s suspension, stating that it is effective immediately while a full investigation is conducted. PGMOL added that they would refrain from further comment until the inquiry concludes.
The video appears to show Coote, 42, speaking candidly about Liverpool’s performance during a game in which he served as the fourth official.
In the clip, Coote is allegedly heard saying, “Liverpool were s**t.” Additionally, when asked his opinion of Klopp, Coote reportedly replies with offensive language, using slurs to describe the former Liverpool manager.

The footage also includes references to a 2020 Premier League match between Liverpool and Burnley, which ended in a 1-1 draw at Anfield.
During the game, Klopp was visibly frustrated with Coote, criticizing the officiating. Following the match, Klopp told BT Sport,
“The referee let lots of challenges go, so it was clear that if the ball comes into the box, it was dangerous.”
Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson also expressed frustration, feeling he deserved a penalty late in the game and openly venting at Coote about the perceived officiating errors.
In the video, Coote allegedly further elaborates on his negative feelings toward Klopp, referencing a previous encounter between them.
Coote claims that Klopp accused him of lying and was generally disrespectful, leading to ongoing friction between the two.
Coote describes his reluctance to engage with Klopp, calling him “arrogant” and expressing more favorable opinions of other Liverpool players, such as James Milner.
A second clip reveals Coote advising others to keep the video private, stressing,
“That f***ing last video can’t go anywhere, seriously.”
Despite his caution, the footage eventually leaked online, sparking widespread controversy and prompting PGMOL’s swift response.
David Coote, a Premier League referee since 2018, recently officiated the 2023 Carabao Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle United.
His suspension raises questions about professional conduct in officiating and underscores PGMOL’s commitment to investigating allegations of inappropriate behavior among officials.
As the investigation unfolds, fans and analysts are closely watching to see what further actions PGMOL might take.
